Intent:
We believe that Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. At Elkesley Primary and Nursery School, we aim to:
- Seek to equip our children with key music concepts, skills and knowledge that will prepare them for the next stage in their learning and provide them with the necessary foundations to be successful in adult life.
- Build a music curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills so that all pupils know more, remember more.
- Enable every pupil to view themselves as musicians.
- Deliver all the requirements of the national curriculum in relation to music.
- Ensure all lessons and extra-curricular music activities include opportunities to develop vocabulary.
- Help children to understand and appreciate how music is composed and performed.
- Enable children to enjoy and have an appreciation for music.
- Encourage children to listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, cultures, styles and traditions.
- Promote singing and use of voice to create different effects.
- Teach children to create and compose music, both on their own and with others.
- Provide opportunities for children to make judgements and express personal preferences about the quality and style of music.
- Provide opportunities for children to take part in performances with an awareness of audience.
Implementation:
As part of the planning process, teachers plan the following:
- We implement our approach through high quality teaching delivering appropriately challenging work for all individuals.
- Every class from EYFS to Y6 have a weekly session from a music teacher whose teaching is based on the National Curriculum. Lessons are personalised to address the individual needs and requirements for a class but coverage is maintained.
- Lessons provide children with knowledge to read and perform music.
- Children from EYFS through to Year 6 are taught key vocabulary.
- For children from year 1 to 6 to learn and use an instrument from boom whackers to ukuleles to guitars/drums/piano.
- Opportunities for whole school and class enrichment through 1:1 and small-group tuition.
- Participation in local music events, such as, Young Voices and school productions.
