Our MFL Curriculum

Key Documents

Intent:

We believe that French teaches us how to communicate with the wider world along with understanding how language is formed. We aim to:

  • Seek to equip our children with key language skills and knowledge that will prepare them for the next stage in their learning and provide them with the necessary foundations to be successful in adult life.
  • Build a French curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills so that all pupils know more and remember more.
  • Enable every pupil to view themselves as expert communicators.
  • Deliver all the requirements of the national curriculum in relation to Modern Foreign Languages.
  • Ensure lessons include opportunities to develop core vocabulary.
  • Make pupils aware of and apply transferable skills required to commutate with a wider audience.
  • Support children in understanding and appreciating other cultures.

Implementation:

As part of the planning process, teachers plan the following:

  • We implement our approach through high quality teaching delivering appropriately challenging work for all individuals.
  • Every class from Y3 to Y6 follows La Jolie Ronda scheme of learning which is based on the National Curriculum. Lessons are personalised to address the individual needs and requirements for a class but coverage is maintained.
  • Children in Key Stage 1 will have the opportunity to explore other cultures and to learn simple words and phrases and songs, such as greetings, from a range of languages including French.
  • Opportunities for children to listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding.
  • Opportunities to explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • Opportunities to engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
  • Opportunities to speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • Opportunities to develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  • Opportunities to read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Opportunities to appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
  • Opportunities provided to broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
  • Opportunities to write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clear
  • Opportunities to describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
  • Opportunities to understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.

Impact:

  • Children will make at least good progress in French from their last point of statutory assessment and from their starting point in Y3.
  • Children will retain knowledge that is pertinent to applying French with a real life context.
  • All children will view themselves as good communicators and will use and apply these skills.
  • Staff will observe children speaking and listening in another language.
  • Children will enjoy MFL lessons and will engage with other cultures and a foreign language.
